After Felix-Gonzalez Torres (2025) emerged upon reading Nancy Spector’s thematic overview of Torres’ work, published to accompany the artist’s solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in 1995. In Torres’ spirit, I created my own enigmatic tribute to dated occurrences, but in this case, it is to mentors who have illuminated my spirit by sharing their wisdom with me. The piece was earnestly done on Pages, using a simple blue bar with white text of their names and the year I met them. I grouped these individuals together due to the spiritual and physical nature of the support they brought into my life, as well as the similarity of the names they share. The Jean-Juan-Jan variations come from a Hebrew origin corresponding to Yohanan, or “God is Gracious”. As in Torres’ work, the image has been dissolved and replaced by language: the viewer is left to image the subject. The names become the points by which aesthetic balance is achieved, as opposed to a result of linear or logical reasoning. The dates are in arbitrary order as a refusal for narrative resolution.
